As part of the school work for the study aboard program, we were told to point out five design differences in London that we do not see in America.
Recycling
One design difference I noticed in the beginning was that London has huge recycling bens on each corner of the streets. There would always be three big bins next to each other. One for paper, one for plastic, and one for general trash. In England, they call trash cans "rubbish bins". Even in restaurants, partially in fast food restaurants, they have three smaller bins for you to put your "rubbish" in. Also, a lot of the restaurants I visited had paper straws instead of plastic. I have always been big on recycling, especially paper. I wish, somehow, I could implement this in America. It would change a lot!
Restaurants
Another design difference I noticed was most of the restaurants in London had free Wifi. I'm sure the reason being was because of all the tourist around London. Another way these restaurants are different is most of the toilets are downstairs. Which I like better because it is out of the way of the kitchen and the eating areas. Also, a lot of restaurants had two stories to give more seating room to their customers.
Side walks
This design difference is kinda odd and I'm surprised I noticed it but in London, their sidewalks are two times wider than our side walks in America. The reason being, I'm sure, is because of all the traffic they have on the streets. Most people walk everywhere and ride the tubes.
Outlets
In London, their outlets are different from ours. The plug is different and also, you have to turn your outlet on. There is a button you push to turn that certain outlet on. The kitchen in our "flat" (which is floor in America) we had a stove top and oven and you had to turn it on from a button by the outlets. Most of the ranges we have, we just turn a nob and it lights up but this is powered by a switch on the wall.
Grocery Stores
I hate grocery shopping but in London, it was fun! In London, they do not have your average stores like Walmart or Kroger, they have M&S, Tesco and many others. The difference in their grocery stores is that they are much, much smaller. Resident in London do not shop for groceries for the whole week. They shop for their lunch for the day of and maybe their dinner. Everything in their grocery stores is fresh. I loved to get the frozen meals, fresh sandwiches and maybe some dessert! And the great thing is, it was less expensive than what you would pay for a whole meal at a restaurant!
