My final week here in London has come and gone. Oh the memories I have made, history lessons I've heard, and the beautiful architecture I've seen. London is full of it all and I will miss it for sure. My last week was one of my favorite weeks because I was finally feeling at home in London. It was easy to get around and the weather was sure looking up! I will be back soon, but for now, I will begin my internship for the summer and learn new skills in the Commercial Design industry. I hope you have enjoyed getting to read about my time in London just as much as I've enjoyed getting to experience it. Stay tuned for more blog post about my internship and maybe some blog post about my weekend travels in Europe!
MONDAY
Today we took a day trip to Kew Palace and Gardens. This palace is the home of King George III and his 15 children. It was built in 1631 by Samuel Fortrey and James Wyatt. It was a beautiful day to walk around the famous Kew Gardens. It was filled with many large green houses and Chihuly glass art. If you've ever been in a real green house, then you know it is 1,000 degrees (exaggerating a little) in there and very, very humid. The minute you walk out is like feeling your first breath of fresh air.
TUESDAY
Our last Travel Tuesday.... It was an early morning for a full day in the city of Brighton, England! We had a long train ride to the coast of England but we were excited for a full day near the beach! Our first stop of the day was at the known monumental structure, The Royal Pavilion of Brighton. The structure is not anything like we've seen before in London. It has a Indian influence on the exterior and Chinese influence on the interior. Sadly we were not able to take picture of the interior but I can assure you, it was stunning! The style of the Pavilion is considered a Victorian style. It was completed in 1823 by John Nash for King George IV. The rich history on the house goes back over 200 years. Many years have been put in to restore the beautiful pavilion after a terrible bombing during WW1. After touring the Royal Pavilion, we walked to the Brighton Palace Pier and enjoyed arcade games and roller coasters! Before it was time to hop back on the train and head back to London, we went by the pebble beach to watch the waves. The sound of the water crushing on the rocks was like no other. I could sit and watch life go by all day long. If you are ever intrested in going to Brighton, make it a weekend trip! One day in this beautiful town wasn't enough!
WEDNESDAY
Today we took a day trip to Cambridge which is about and hour and a half away from London. The Interior Design class and Business class partnered in todays activities. Cambridge is a small town. It gives you the feel of the country side (which I love). The buildings were unique in style and the people were very nice. It all seemed like they were one big family. The first activity of the day was a punting tour. Yes, I know what you're thinking, what is punting? Punting is simply a boat tour. We were given a tour around the river to see the many colleges Cambridges houses. One being the King's College. After the tour we ate at a local Barbecue Shop (finally American food)! After we filled our bellies, we walked around the town and stoped at many local markets. I found souvenirs for my family and some candy for myself for the long train ride ahead!
THURSDAY
Today's weather was perfect! To start the day off, we went to Osterley Park House. Osterley Park House was built in 1761 by Robert Adams. I love the style and passion Robert Adams puts into his work. It is full of color and different motifs combined into one. Pictures do not do his work justice. Osterley is designed in the Georgian style. It houses the original furniture and textiles. This house is the only National Trust building that was designed by Robert Adams on the exterior and interior. Before our tour, we walked around the parks and took a look at the gift shop! It was nice to sit outside and soak up some sun! While sitting at the picnic tables I met a new friend named Bluebell! She was the sweetest golden retriever and I wish I could have taken her home with me! ( I don't think beau would approve though) Around noon, we were able to get a full tour of the home including the top floor. Which isn't open to the public often. Many movie and television shows have been filmed here. It was a short day for us because we had our closing reception for the British Studies Program this afternoon. The reception was very touching. The theater students preformed a play for us to end our time here in London. (yes I teared up a bit) I consider London a little piece of home now and I will forever cherish all the memories I've made here and the lessons I've learned!
